The Sun Valley Writers’ Conference, first held in 1995, is a four-day annual event featuring prominent writers who represent a wide spectrum of thought, and give lectures and readings. This year’s event, August 18-21, will bring to town guest presenters Supreme Court Justice Stephen G. Breyer, Pulitzer Prize biographers Robert Caro, Doris Kearns Goodwin, Mark Stevens and Annalynn Swan, novelists Howard Norman and Susanna Moore, as well as Cokie Roberts, Peter Hessler, Strobe Talbott, and other authors and commentators.
Each day of the conference begins with breakout sessions wherein small groups of attendees meet with one or two writers to discuss a specific topic. Panel discussions, readings and major talks fill the rest of the day and early evening on the grounds of the Sun Valley Resort.
The Sun Valley Writers’ Conference, guided by a small Board of Directors, is an Idaho nonprofit corporation with a volunteer executive director, a small group of consultants, and energetic local volunteers. Anchored by important literary figures, the conference brings discerning readers and writers together in a congenial environment to consider ideas set forth in fiction, nonfiction, journalism, poetry, and filmmaking.
