Every October since 1990, Sun Valley has enjoyed the sounds of great jazz. The Sun Valley Swing ‘n’ Dixie Jazz Jamboree was the passion and brainchild of the late Tom Hazzard, and is now carried on through the efforts of his daughter and son-in-law. The value of providing quality entertainment aside, Tom’s biggest desire was to preserve and promote jazz by educating the younger generations about the value of an American original. If you’ve ever attended the Jamboree, you know that Tom’s dream is alive and well! In 2006, the Jazz Jamboree takes place October 18-22. Over 300 performances are presented in 12 different venues throughout the Valley. The festival will see the return of favorites like Titan Hot Seven and Blue Street Jazz Band, local groups like the Joe Fos Trio, international groups like Big Band Swing Design, and several newcomers. Forever Plaid, with their celestial tunes, will also make an appearance, sponsored by Sun Valley Company. To kick off the Jamboree, a free Community Concert—featuring Wood River High Wolverine Jazz Band and Igor’s Jazz Cowboys—will be held in the Sun Valley Company’s indoor ice rink on Tuesday, October 17. Also free to the community are several jazz movies, showing at Sun Valley’s Opera House on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Sunday. Please call for schedule information.
